Asbestos penalties increase tenfold

The State Government has announced tougher penalties for people and corporations caught failing to take appropriate safeguards when handling or disposing of asbestos.

Amendments to the Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992 include new fines of up to $10,000 for individuals and $50,000 for corporations, with on-the-spot infringements introduced for specified asbestos-related offences.

Health Minister John Day said the new fines represented a 10-fold increase on the current penalties.
